Sadly, due to Covid, the Avalon League was cancelled this year. However, a few clubs decided to play their fixtures anyway as friendlies.
Wells GC hosted Worlebury GC recently and played the usual 5x 4BBB format.
With only four players that had represented the club in this type of team match before there was concern as to the ability to compete.
A strong Worlebury team arrived on a lovely warm and dry day with just a little wind .
Ashton Wylie and Peter Cherry went out first and won 2&1 ,helped by the need for one of the Worlebury players having to leave before the end for important firefighting duties.
Darren Barnett & Paul Cullen had a hard fought match which was eventually halved as they won the 18th hole.
Glen Crocker and Nick Carter rolled back the years to defeat younger opponents ( who had two gimme 2`s ) 4&3 with good team work.
Bill McCollum combined his experience and accuracy with the long hitting youth of Ben Barnett to win easily 5&4.
Finally, the last match was decided with the final putt of the day on the 18th. Rory Passmore and Nick Poore thereby halved their match.
Much to everyone`s surprise Wells therefore won 4-1 in a match played in excellent spirit but competitively.
