Stragglers vs Tall Pines:

Stragglers vs Tall Pines:

On Sunday, the Stragglers hosted Tall Pines in the first leg of this popular fixture.
After a hearty breakfast, we started off in fine weather. However, the weather wasn’t to last and
some interesting results came to pass.

  • First out were Rory Passmore and Bill Levell. This pairing had the match sown up in majestic style and came in with a fine 4 and 3 victory. Finishing on the 15th, just before the rain started.
  • Second out were the two Terrys...Pearce and Searle. Terry P thought it was fancy dress as his multicoloured socks would have made Joseph blush....we think it was something to do with gay pride....The mind boggles... however, it must have had an effect on the opponents as the Terry’s won 8 and7. The opponents lost 8 balls.... Didn’t fancy going in to the undergrowth with Terry apparently!!
  • Third were Simon and Aaron who were unusually playing a mixed pairing. This meant that Simon couldn’t swear when he topped his tee shot on the first about 20 feet. It obviously got better as they ran in comfortable winners 6 and 4. Well played Aaron...
  • Fourth pairing, myself and George Davis had stiff opponents, but we managed to wear them down. In fact we were never behind. We were 3 up after 15, and due to the heavy rain, the opponents chickened out and gave us the match.... So I suppose we won 3 up. Of the 15 holes played, George played very well for 13, but I carried him for the rest of the round.
  • Last out were Guy Timson and Peter Cherry. Guy heard it might rain a bit so went out in a buggy so he didn’t get wet.....Despite one of the Tall Pines players getting a hole in one on the 5th with an 8 iron, the home team were seldom in trouble.... In fact Tall Pines again conceded the match on the14th because of the weather. We are made of stronger stuff here in Wells, although to be fair, it wasvery wet and we were glad to come in, just don’t tell them that !!

So overall, Wells claimed a victory 4 1⁄2 - 1⁄2....... Second leg in September sunshine.....
