Wells GC Seniors` played in the final of the Somerset Seniors` Bowl recently.
The opposition was Minehead GC and the match was played at the neutral venue of Long Sutton GC.
The match was played in very wet and blustery conditions , following torrential rain the day before so greens were inevitably very slow and fairways soggy.
Nick Wilson and Bill McCollum turned in their usual efficient performance winning easily 4&3.
Simon Jackson and Duncan Gowen fought hard but eventually lost on the last hole 1down.
Martin Barnes and Stuart Austwick had a real fight and were at one stage 3 down. They pulled it back but could not quite manage a win , also losing 1 down on the 18th.
Glen Crocker and Mike Metcalfe got off to a similar start going three down early on. Eventually , they turned the match around with an inspired bout of putting over the back half and won a really good match 2&1.
Thus it was 2-2 and all depending on the first match out which needed to go down the 19th. Andy Green and Jim Lunt were playing two very good Minehead players.
Memories of two years ago floated to the surface ( the first pair out then won on the 7th extra hole ) but unfortunately the excellence of the Minehead duo prevailed on the first extra hole.
So Minehead won a keenly fought contest played in excellent spirit by the narrowest margin, 3-2.
Wells had a good campaign which included a couple of difficult matches against strong opposition which they won to get to the final whilst Minehead had an easier route but there strength in depth prevailed.
